Released in 2004, the album’s production features sinister, super villain inspired sample-based tracks, while the lyrics interplay with dialogue and cut out of vintage superhero TV shows to develop an engaging, villainous narrative. “Madvillainy” is the brainchild of renowned producer Madlib, and the famous masked rapper MF DOOM. “To Pimp a Butterfly” by Kendrick Lamar is a perfect album, “A Love Supreme” by John Coltrane is a perfect album, and the subject if this review, “Madvillainy” by Madvillain, is a perfect album. There are, however, a few albums I consider perfect. There are many albums that come close to this standard, for instance D’Angelo’s “Black Messiah” is one of my favorites, but there are some songs that I wish D’Angelo expanded on, tracks that feel like musical thoughts rather than coherent pieces. So a perfect album is an album that I would fundamentally alter in no way. Something is, to me, perfect when, if given the opportunity, I would decide to change absolutely nothing. So let’s redefine perfection, particularly relative to music, to a more realistic standard.
